Merle L. Schmidt's Obituary
Merle L. Schmidt, age 86, of St. Clair, passed away peacefully, with is family at his side following a brief illness, on May 9, 2025. He was born November 27, 1938 in Columbus Twp. to the late Leonard and Mildred Schmidt.
On September 23, 1987, Merle married Ruth Schuman. She preceded him in death in 2018. Merle proudly served with the U.S. Navy. He retired from Chrysler World Headquarters as a millwright in 2000 following many years of employment. He was also a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Merle was an avid gardener and woodworker and a blessing to his many family, neighbors and friends. He enjoyed all his visits and sharing stories with each of them. Merle was always generous with his personal time to help anyone in need. He will be dearly missed.
Merle is survived by his daughters, Kelly Schmidt and Karry (Jamie) Hepting; step-daughters, Sherry Harms and Cathy (Steven) Wittbrodt; grandchildren, Kyle and Lexie Hepting; step-grandchildren, Kristie (James) and Carlie (Jeff); step great grandson, Benjamin; siblings, Don (Janet) Schmidt and Judy Schneider and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brother in law, Leroy Schneider.
Funeral services are Tuesday, May 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, St. Clair. Visiting hours are Monday 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.
