Mark A. Van Hecke's Obituary
Mark A. Van Hecke, age 57, of East China Twp., died peacefully on April 5, 2017, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born August 28, 1959 to Bill and Geri Van Hecke. On June 4, 1983 Mark married Bonnie Biewer.
Mark attended St. Clair County Community College and later received his Master’s Degree in teaching from Michigan State University. He was a teacher at Anchor Bay High School and Middle School for over 30 years, where he also received Teacher of the Year awards twice. Mark served as the director of the Michigan Science Olympiad for several years and participated in the Olympiad for over 30 years. He was also a National Event Supervisor.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; sons, Matt (Jeani) Van Hecke and Jason (Angie) Van Hecke; grandchildren, Henry, Hazel, Addilyn and Reed Van Hecke; mother, Geri Van Hecke; brother, Bill (Grace) Van Hecke; sisters, Vickie Hohmann and Lisa Van Hecke; brothers in law and sisters in law, Jim and Sue Biewer and Scott and Cindy Biewer and his very close friend, Chris Cooper. He will also be missed by his beloved dog, Frankie.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Bill Van Hecke.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held Tuesday April 11th at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Our Lady on the River Parish, Marine City. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, St. Clair. Visiting hours are Monday April 10th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. and Tuesday 10 to 11 a.m. at church prior to mass.
