James William Chopp's Obituary
James William Chopp, age 87, of Marine City, passed away November 8, 2024 with his loved ones by his side.
James was born in Laurium, Michigan to the late Samuel and Agnes Chopp. On June 10, 1961 James married Terese Scholtes. She preceded him in death May 6, 2007.
James received his PhD in Educational Administration and enjoyed a 50 year career in education. James retired as principal and later served as interim superintendent for many local school districts. During his career he was the Special Education Director for Detroit, East China and Port Huron Public Schools. James also took great pride working with and mentoring student teachers.
James was a longtime member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Marine City. He enjoyed rooting for all Michigan sports teams, especially his beloved Lions. He also loved traveling the state, visiting relatives and watching the freighters pass by. James was a man of great faith, which carried him forward each day. He loved his country, which was evident by his patriotic spirit. He also enjoyed meeting new people, hearing their stories and passing friendly advice. His family will forever remember his deep love for each of them and the legacy he has left them with.
James is survived by his children, Don (Sybil) Chopp, Connie (Darryl) Hagel and Carrie (Tim) Rhodes; grandchildren, Jonathan (Lindsay) Chopp, Nicole (Eric Jr.) Lipke, Taylor (Shane) Jackson, Alex Hagel, Brittney (David) Wynkoop and Timothy Rhodes; great grandchildren, Max, Demi and Duke Chopp, Kennedy Jackson and Avery, Cade and Easton Wynkoop; siblings, Jerome (Eileen) Chopp, Katherine “Kathie” Branham-Chopp and Margaret “Peggy” (Doug) Ellinger and many nieces and nephews.
James was predeceased by his sons, Pat, Chris and Tom Chopp and siblings, Vince, Eddie and Patty.
A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, November 22nd at 12:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Marine City. Visiting hours will be one hour prior to mass from 11:00 to 12:00.
