George Alfred Roegner's Obituary
George Alfred Roegner, a pillar of his community and a devoted educator, departed this world on January 3, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family in his St. Clair, Michigan home. His valiant fight against cancer ended peacefully at the age of 89.
Born on May 28, 1934 in St. Clair, Michigan, George’s life was a testament to dedication – to family, community, and the pursuit of knowledge. His legacy, marked by love, kindness and an enduring commitment to education, has left an indelible mark on the lives of many.
Survived by his cherished wife of 67 years, Rosalyn (Nippy) Roegner, George and Rosalyn built a family that became the center of his universe. He leaves behind five children: Mark Roegner (Jenny Mendes), grand daughter Arwen and great grandson Aaren; Sue Smith (Eric smith) and grand daughter Elizabeth; Paul Roegner (Little Brother Luke); John Roegner (Simon Bell), and Sarah Wuebben (Douglas Wuebben) and grandchildren, Brittney and Andrew. He cherished the time spent with each of them.
He is preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Morell and Ethyln (Sis) Dewitt.
A St. Clair native, George graduated from St. Clair High School in 1952. His passion for education led him to Michigan State University and then to Central Michigan University then on to Eastern Michigan for his masters. He taught in the East China School District in different capacities for almost 40 years.
George's influence extended beyond his professional achievements. A devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he was a lay reader and junior warden, his faith provided him comfort and strength throughout his journey. He was also very involved with East China Red Brick School, East China summer recreation and was a cub master for the Scouts.
He enjoyed his life on the river and traveling throughout the world.
To honor George’s memory, a memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, St. Clair on Saturday March 2, 2024 at 12 :00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the St. Clair Ecumenical Food Pantry and Hunter Hospitality House of Port Huron reflecting George’s lifelong commitment to making a positive impact.
