For those of us Spartans who were introduced to him in Shaw Hall, and especially for those seven who later lived with him in our beloved hovel on Francis Street, George will always be “Sid”. He was a good, reliable, generous, humorous friend and comrade. When I caught up with him at our 30th reunion I found that he had achieved every one of the simple dreams he had expressed while in school: practicing law, teaching history, living on the St. Clair River, and marrying his childhood sweetheart.
Sid was a pillar of sanity in that chaotic environment, providing us tantalizing glimpses of how a functioning adult might act under such circumstances. It was usually Sid who would gently suggest that perhaps it was getting time for us to think about cleaning the bathroom again. When we snapped off a sofa leg during a particularly heated furniture hopping competition, I recall Sid suggesting that a large, unopened can of Dinty Moore Beef Stew could serve as a temporary replacement. While my fading memory of who was responsible for the emergency repair might be faulty, it is telling that many years later it would be Sid whom I would associate with providing that modicum of order and stability to our household. That can of beef stew dependably supported our sofa for the rest of the academic year.
Sid’s enthusiasm for cargo ships passing along the St. Clair was contagious. He had convinced a number of us that a lucrative summer of excitement and romance could be spent as deckhands on a Great Lakes freighter. Unfortunately, one night he regaled us with spellbinding stories of Great Lakes’ storms and ship wrecks; I applied to be a summer mail carrier for the USPS the very next day.
Thanks for all the good memories, Sid. It was a pleasure and honor to be back in your life these past dozen or so years.

I am a student of Mr. Joachim and I have had him for 2 different courses. I am 51 years old and felt out of place going back to college at my age. I took a history course because I enjoy history and felt that is something I could manage. Mr. Joachim was very welcoming and made me feel less uncomfortable being in a class with very young people. He is a great teacher and I learned a lot from his lessons.
I always enjoyed visiting with Jim and greatly admired him. I know that he was popular with his students and even managed to be quite personable in online classes.
