Evelyn A. Schoof's Obituary
The Lord called Evelyn on September 26, 2019. She was born in Detroit on Tuesday, April 9, 1929 to George and Margaret Weirmeir, joining her brother, Allen. Later, the family moved to St. Clair Shores where they resided for over 25 years. They were member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church on Greater Mack and Nine Mile Rd., where Evelyn was confirmed and sang in the choir.
She was a graduated of South Lake High School, as was her brother. Her first job was Secretary to the manager of First State Bank in East Detroit.
She left to become Secretary to the resident manager of the Detroit Statler Hotel. She was employed there when Mr. Conrad Hilton purchased the Statler chain and renamed the hotel the Statler Hilton. After seven years she was employed by the following companies; She received FBI clearance to be employed as Secretary to the Chief Engineer of Continental Aviation and Engineering Co. After two years, the company lost an Army contract and went out of business.
She accepted a position as Secretary to the Advertising Manager of Sports Illustrated, the Division of Time, Inc. located in the Fisher Building and was there for 6 years. She then became Secretary to the owner of Equitable Engineering Company in Royal Oak. Terrible news was received when the owner, Anderson Duggar, was lost in the company plane somewhere over Lake Michigan. Evelyn continued working for the new owner until she decided to move to California.
She resided in Tarzana, located in the San Fernando Valley and became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Reseda, CA. She took a job as Secretary to the Vice President of the Copper Penny restaurant chain in Los Angeles, a division of International Industries. She worked for several men in this position and then transferred to IHOP Corp. as secretary to the Vice President and Regional Director of Franchise operations.
She decided to take a break, but not for long. She became manager of the apartment building where she resided. Her mother came to live with her and enjoyed the weather and meeting new friends in the courtyard. After several years she became bedridden and Evelyn was her caregiver. She turned 100 in August of 1994 and the Lord called her on November 22, 1994. To become closer to her brother, Allen, and his family, after 25 years in California, she decided to return to Michigan. She has been living in Mt. Clemens and is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Clinton Twp.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, her brother Allen, who passed away on June 25, 2000. She was married to Herbert Schoof of Mt. Clemens who is also deceased. She is survived by her sister in law, Barbara of Macomb; nieces and nephews, Allen Jr. (Leslie) of Greenville, SC, David Weirmeir of Macomb, Christine Finn (Eddie) of Marysville, Cindi Rietze (Bob) of Bradenton, FL, Cathi Jones (Todd) of Lexington, MI and all their children. She is also survived by many loving cousins in Ontario, Canada.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday October 2nd at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 38900 Harper Ave., Clinton Twp., Michigan. Visitation will be 10 – 11 a.m. prior to service at church.
