Reverend Edward W. Ritter's Obituary
Reverend Edward Ritter, age 91, of East China Twp., went home to be with the Lord on August 12, 2017. He was born January 18, 1926 in Detroit to the late Caspar and Anna Ritter.
Father Ritter was ordained June 2, 1951 and was blessed with seven assignments with the Archdiocese of Detroit. He was assistant pastor at St. Joseph Parish, Port Huron from 1951 – 1956 and St. Aloysius Parish, Detroit 1956 – 1961. He was chaplain at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Detroit from 1961 – 1966 and assistant pastor at St. Francis Xavier Parish, Ecorse from 1966 – 1969. His first assignment as pastor was at St. Leonard Parish, Warren from 1969 to 1977 and then was pastor at St. Christopher Parish, Detroit from 1977 to 1982. His final assignment was as pastor for St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clair from 1982 – 2001. He retired in 2001 following his 50th year anniversary as a priest.
He is survived by his brother; William (MaryAnn) Ritter and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother; Caspar (Irene) Ritter, sister; Margaret (Richard) Houlihan and sister in law; Mary Ann Ritter.
Father Ritter loved living on the St. Clair River where he enjoyed boating and many fishing trips. He also loved all his parish family and was grateful for their love and prayers.
A Mass of Resurrection will be Friday August 18th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clair. Visitation will be Wednesday 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home, China Twp., Thursday 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home and Thursday 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Vigil service with rosary will be Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at church. Additional visitation Friday prior to mass 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
