Donald A. Horn's Obituary
Donald A. Horn, age 92, of East China Twp., passed away March 5, 2023, surrounded by family. He was born September 1, 1930, to the late Arthur and Louise (Sharrow) Horn.
Don was a graduate of Marine City High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Peregrine during the Korean War. He later sailed for the Cleveland-Cliffs Co. on the steamship Champlain. The remainder of his career was spent as a local 25 ironworker, working on many commercial buildings, power plants and bridges, retiring in 1987. He was most proud of having worked on the Mackinaw Bridge. He would later enjoy participating in the Labor Day Bridge Walk and attended many Ironworkers’ Festivals, receiving special recognition for his work on the “Mighty Mac”.
Don married Agnes Sicken on February 20, 1960, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Together they raised five children and lived a happy life until her death in 2008.
Don proudly served his fellow residents of East China as a township trustee for 30 non-consecutive years. He was active in the Marine City Old Newsboys/Girls, having served as President 1997-98; and was a member of the American Legion Post #382, St. Clair. He was the consummate Mr. Fix-It. He was honored to be a regular blood donor throughout his life. Don had many hobbies, but his favorite was walleye fishing on the St Clair River. He also enjoyed gardening and cold beer while hosting fish frys with his family and friends.
Don will be fondly remembered as a man of great integrity, having a keen sense of humor and generous spirit.
He is survived by his children, Michael (Gisela) Horn, Patrick (Debbie) Horn, Brian Horn, Mary Catharine Horn and Eric (Jeri) Horn; grandchildren, Matthew, Joseph, Angela, Andrew, Lola and Rose Horn; sister, Dianne (Larry) Woodward and many nieces, nephews and beloved furry companion Buck.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Agnes; brothers, Robert Horn and wife Janet, Jim Horn and wife Mary Ann; sisters, Helen McClellan and husband Lloyd, Virginia Heath and husband Gerald and Dorothy Brotherton and husband Ralph.
Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 11 at Our Lady on the River Parish, Holy Cross Catholic Church, Marine City. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Marine City.
Visiting hours will be Friday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. and at church one hour prior to mass. Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
