Bernetta Ann Borneman
Bernetta Ann Borneman (Ameel), age 83, of Marine City passed away on January 25th, 2025. She was born in St. Clair, MI on September 15th, 1941, to the late Bernard and Anita Ameel. Bernetta was a graduate of Marine City High School. She married her high school sweetheart Joseph E. Borneman on March 11th, 1961.
Bernetta was a long-time member of the (previous) First United Methodist Church of Marine City. She was active in her church as a volunteer and church circle group. After the church closed, Bernetta (and Joe) became members of St. John's United Church of Christ in Marine City. Bernetta also loved and valued the time spent with special friends in her Bible Study group.
Bernetta was a retired homemaker. In earlier years, she worked as a secretary, at her uncle’s flower shop, and in the bakery/deli all in Marine City, where she met numerous friends and people throughout her years of employment. Prior to retirement she volunteered her services in the community. She enjoyed her life living on the river with her husband and raising their two children. Bernetta also looked after and cared for her late mother-in-law for many years, who also lived in the “little house” on their property. Bernetta loved her time spent with neighbors who eventually became like family to her. She cherished spending time with family/ friends, and having fun with her grandchildren, niece/nephew, and all the children and adults she loved. Prior to her mobility issues, she enjoyed tap dancing with the seniors and baton twirling. She loved singing and led an active life with Barbershopper’s and Sweet Adelines.
Bernetta practiced daily devotional readings and personal journaling for years. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and “scratch offs”. She and Joe loved going to the casino and playing slots and Keno with her brother and sister-in-law.
Bernetta will be remembered for her kindness, big heart, and empathy for others… often putting others needs before her own. In addition, people will remember her for the numerous nicknames she accumulated over the years. She was known as: Nett, Bernie, Nettie, Nemit, Auntie B, Mrs. B, Buns, and Diaps (all names out of love). Bernetta will be forever loved and missed by everyone who knew her.
Bernetta was proceeded in death by many family members and friends. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years Joseph E. Borneman, daughter Carrie (Jeff) Taylor, son Joseph D. Borneman, granddaughter Gabrielle Borneman, grandson Joseph “Hunter” Borneman, brother Richard (Nancy) Ameel, sister-in-law Joan Taylor. She is also survived by a close nephew Mark Ameel and his family. She was preceeded in death by her niece/God-daughter Jennifer Ameel.
Bernetta was blessed to have bonus grandchildren and great-grandchildren in her life: Colette (Joe) Kaiser, Jessica (Jake) Alessandri son: Levi , Anna (Trevor) Brown and son: Walker. In addition, there are others she considered family: “The Sweets”. Several nieces, nephews, many cousins, and special friends will always be carried in her heart.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 29, 2025 at 11 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ, Marine City. The family will receive visitors from 10 - 11 a.m. prior to service.
