My name is Heather Swartz and I just found out yesterday that Wally passed. I worked with Wally at JCPenney Salon until he retired. Wally gave me a few of his clients when he left the salon. He told me that he liked how I treated people.I felt like that was one of the best compliments I have ever gotten from anyone. It stuck with me even years later. He would stop in the salon to to say hi and get an occasional haircut. His clients continue to ask after him and I am deeply saddened that I will have to tell them that such a bright, beautiful person is no longer with us. I really wished I knew sooner. My condolences to his friends and family. Please know that his JCPenney Salon family hearts are with him and all of you.
Our family was deeply saddened by the news of Wally's death. He was the first friend that my husband and I made when we moved to Toledo. Our first residence was an apartment in a grand building in the Old West End, shared by Wally and Jim. As soon as we pulled up in our U-Haul on moving day, Wally came running out the back door of the building, welcoming us and offering to help carry things into our new place. He and Jim became good friends and Wally became our hairdresser, too. Years passed and although we moved to different places, we stayed close, Our daughter was born a few years later and Wally tended to keeping us looking perky until he retired. That covered over twenty years of special visits that were about so much more than hair. Wally's philosophy of living was to simply lovingly care for everyone he met. He loved his family very much but also opened his arms to consider friends as family. We lovingly called him "Uncle Wally."
Some of my warmest memories are of observing Wally treating his older clients as royalty and showing sincere care and kindness toward everyone. His clients were whole people to him and the world was a place to teach us all how best to behave toward each other.
Wally had such an important place in our family. We are heartbroken that our world has lost this great man. We send our deepest condolences to his family.
