Mrs. Sophia Shiverski's Obituary
Sophia Shiverski, age 95, formerly of St. Clair, died February 7, 2014. She was born in Pennsylvania on May 3, 1918, to Frank and Hedwig Bartoszek. When she was five years old, her family moved to Perronville, Michigan, where they purchased the town from the Perron family. It consisted of a general store, bar, apartments and farm. Sophia attended Harris schools. She was married to John for 59 years until his death in August 2000.
Sophia was a member of St. Michael’s Parish (St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton), where she was a lector, Eucharist Minister and on the Parish Council.
In 1959, she moved with her husband, John, and children to Warren, Mich. where her husband had taken a job. Upon his retirement, they moved back to Perronville. After his death, she moved into the Independent Living facility at the Bishop Noa Home where she stayed for two years until she moved down state to be with her daughters. Her remaining years were spent at St. Elizabeth Briarbank in Bloomfield Hills and then Medilodge Nursing Home in St. Clair.
Sophia is survived by three children, Rev. John (Fr. Jim) Shiverski of Marquette, Judy (Dave) Rancilio of St. Clair and Sandra (Mike) Demery of Bloomfield Hills. Four grandchildren, Jeffrey (Anne) Rancilio, Gregory (Melinda) Rancilio, Marty (Anne) Rancilio and Sarah Demery. Six great grandchildren, Lindsey, Kylie, Zachary, Michael, Grace and Julia Rancilio. Brother, Anthony (Faye) Bartoszek of Kansas and sister, Helen of Arizona. Three sisters in law, Doreen, Margaret and Bea Bartoszek and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson Patrick Demery, sisters,Mary Kolodz and Mildred Yagodzinski and brothers, Joseph, John, Thomas, Francis and Florian.
Her faith and spending time with family and friends were her highest priorities. Her pastimes included but were not limited to reading, quilting, knitting, sewing, cooking, baking and travelling.
She will be remembered for her infectious smile and ALL the precious time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family thanks God for sharing her with them for the past 95 years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday February 10th at 5:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clair. Visitation at the church prior to mass is from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
Interment will be in St. Michael’s-Harris Twp. Cemetery, Perronville, Mich.
