Richard J. (Dick) Lumley's Obituary
Richard J. (Dick) Lumley, age 76, of East China, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on December 10, 2023. He was born on November 2, 1947 to the late Nelson and Betty Lumley. Rich was a graduate of St. Clair high school, class of 1965. Following high school, he proudly enlisted into the United States Army, where he honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. Dick married, Mary Ellen Cahours October 13, 1967. Rich worked in the brass industry for several years. He was employed by various companies, retiring from International Casting Corporation, New Baltimore. Dick was an active member for the Bowling Association serving as secretary, treasurer, and certifying awards for men’s leagues in St. Clair County. He volunteered a lot of his time with the campfire association for 18 years. He was also a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he and Mary would assist in the white elephant. Dick was an avid bowler, starting as a kid, throughout his adulthood until 2022, he spent many nights and weekends bowling in various leagues and tournaments, he and his team were the proud state champion in 1976. Aside from bowling, Rich enjoyed fishing and taking his family on camping trips. In his earlier years he liked to snowmobile. Above all, Dick cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a man who put others needs before his own, and would do anything for anyone. If someone needed a place to stay, Dick always had a room available.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ellen; daughters, Jody (Matt) Nichols, Gigi (Dale) Kuefler, Cheri (Larry) Schweihofer; grandchildren, SheAnne (David) Lumley-Valdez; Ellen (Montana) Blanchard, Jared Nichols, Dylan Nichols, Alex Gasparetto, Lance Schweihofer, Maxfield Schweihofer, Julia Schweihofer, Rachelle Rae Schweihofer; great granddaughters, Raelynn Anne, Kenna Kay, Charlotte Robin, and Nick; siblings, Carol (Dan) Randolph, Don (Chalma) Lumley, Connie (Dan) Doan, Marilyn (George) Frank, Dinah O’Dell, as well as several nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Mark Lumley and Nelson Lumley.
A funeral service will be Saturday, December 16th at 11:00 a.m. at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. Visiting hours will be Friday, December 15th from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. as well as one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Following the service, interment and military honors will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. Clair and Richmond Youth Bowling Teams.
