Pansy Shorkey's Obituary
Pansy Shorkey, age 105, of Marine City, passed away November 21, 2022.
Born November 3, 1917, Pansy Christine Duckworth, in the tiny farming community of Cambridge, Missouri near the Missouri River. Second youngest of seven children (four boys, three girls) who all have predeceased her: Harmon, Howard, Claude, John, Bernice, and Hazel.
Pansy attended a one-room school until high school. She attended Marshall High School, Marshall, Missouri and graduated in the Class of 1935. After high school, Pansy worked for International Shoe Company, Marshall, Missouri, skated on the local roller derby team, and married Leonard A. Schelp in April, 1940 who passed away suddenly February 18, 1941.
Pansy met Thomas Edward Shorkey at a roller rink in Kansas City, Missouri. They married March 17, 1944 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Jackson, Tennessee while “Ed” was serving in the Army. Ed Shorkey passed away May 19, 2007 at 85 years of age.
Always ready to take on anything, Pansy’s employment in Kansas City was testing ammunition for use during World War II. Pansy and Ed moved to Marine City (Ed’s home town) in approximately 1949. Together they owned and operated Shorkey’s Corner Grocery on Fairbanks Street in Marine City for 24 years and Shorkey’s Party Store (the former Springborn Drug Store) on Broadway in Marine City for several years. Pansy was also a long-time member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Marine City.
She is survived by two children: Richard C. Shorkey (wife Catherine) of Medford, Oregon; Christine A. Beck (husband Joseph) of Washington, Michigan; grandchildren, Andrea Beck, Elizabeth Beck Shepherd and Aaron Beck; great grandchildren, Olivia, Liam, and Jack Shepherd; Jake, Mason, and Brody Beck.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday January 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church OLR Parish, Marine City. Urn interment following at Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday January 13, 2022 from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Holy Cross Educational Fund.
