Michael Lee VanMilligan's Obituary
CMSGT Michael L Van Milligan, USAF Retired
Michael Lee Van Milligan, 79 of Marine City, MI passed away peacefully with his
daughters at his side on August 9, 2025, after a lengthy illness.
Born on December 6, 1945, in Blue Island, Illinois to Peter C and Ruth Van Milligan,
Mike devoted his life to service, integrity and family. He proudly served his country in the
United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and went on to complete an
extraordinary 33-year career both in the Air Force and the Michigan Air National Guard.
Rising to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, he earned respect, accolades and
admiration from all who served alongside him. His leadership, steady hand, and
unwavering commitment to his fellow Airmen left a legacy that will endure far beyond his
years in uniform.
While stationed at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mike met and married the love of
his life, Marsha, at the base chapel on April 22, 1967 – a union that became the
cornerstone of his life. Together they raised two daughters and built a family rooted in
love, togetherness, resilience and shared purpose. Sadly, Marsha passed away in 2013
after they had celebrated 45 years of marriage.
Outside of his military service, Mike was known for his outstanding mechanical ability- if
he couldn’t fix it, it truly was broken. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially
having pool days with his “girls”. He loved listening to Peter Frampton, having a few
beers and grilling up his delicious BBQ ribs. He carried the same discipline and
devotion into his civilian life, always putting family and friends first and finding the most
joy when he had all his family together.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his cherished daughters, Mychal (Scott) Fearncombe,
Shannon (Mike) Furtah, his adored granddaughters, Shaylyn (Justin) Van Milligan,
Jenna Fearncombe, Isabelle and Chloe Furtah and his beloved great -granddaughter,
Kinsley Wall. He is also survived by his sister, Karyn Hradsky, and brother Neil (Janeth)
Van Milligan, his sister and brother-in-law, Kelle and Jim Schultz, a niece, nephews,
numerous cousins, as well as treasured friends who were like family. He is now reunited
with his loving wife, Marsha and his parents.
A service honoring his life and military career will be held on Wednesday, August, 13th at
5:00 p.m. with full military honors followed by a sharing of memories service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Clair County Allied Vets.
Mike served his country with honor, lived his life with purpose, and loved without
reservation. His courage and character will continue to guide all who knew him.
Until we meet again Dad, Grandpa, Papa, GG Papa. Save us a place beside you.
