Melvin Paul Zimmer's Obituary
Melvin Paul Zimmer, age 93, of China Twp., passed away July 10, 2024. He was born January 7, 1931 in St. Clair Twp. to the late Paul and Ella (Westrick) Zimmer.
On September 1, 1951 Melvin married Betty Siefert. Together they had two daughters, Sue (Paul) Rau and Sandy Zimmer. Betty and Sandy preceded him in death in 1956.
Melvin would later marry Mary Ellen Prior on January 7, 1961. Together they had 5 children, Michelle (Mark) Jones, Mike (Carol) Zimmer, Nancy Zimmer, Julie (Joe Ilowski) Zimmer and Dan (Elizabeth) Zimmer. Mary Ellen preceded him in death in 2007.
Melvin is also survived by his sister, Marie Verbeke and sister in law, Noreen Prior and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by his son in law, Robert Brozowski and brothers, Roy, Don and Harvey Zimmer.
Melvin started his working career as a local farmer and in 1958, Melvin along with is brother, Roy, started Zimmer Sales and Service in China Twp. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a Honorary Life member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2251, St. Clair. In addition to his commitment to maintaining a well manicured lawn, Melvin also enjoyed gardening each season. Each year he looked forward to spending time with his brothers in the U.P. deer hunting. Melvin will be remembered by many as a man of great faith with a strong work ethic.
A Funeral Mass will be held Monday, July 15th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clair. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Visiting hours are Sunday, July 14th 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. A rosary will be offered Sunday at 6 p.m.
