Matthew J. Northrop's Obituary
Matthew Northrop, age 64, of St. Clair, passed away on March 2, 2023 after a brief battle with cancer, at his daughter’s home in Arizona.
Matthew John Northrop was born in Lapeer, Michigan on January 18, 1959. He is the son of the late Jay and Rose (Elwart) Northrop.
Matt married Barbara (Zaremba) on May 15, 1981. Barb passed away on March 9, 2004.
Matt graduated from Imlay City High School in 1977. He attended St Clair County Community College and Alpena Community College, earning a degree and certificate in Fish Hatchery and Water Management. He had a long-standing career working for Chrysler for over 32 years. Matt enjoyed an early retirement from Chrysler in October 2016. After retirement, Matt lived his dream of moving to northern Michigan on Bois Blanc Island, where he has several dear friends who became like family to him. He had a great passion for the outdoors and he enjoyed several hunting and fishing trips, including an African Hunting Safari.
Matt is survived by his 3 children: Sarah (Jayson) Ayers of Arizona, Alex Northrop of Oklahoma and Andrew (Adam) Gardner-Northrop of Midland, MI. Grandchildren: Dylan, Addyson, Henry, Alyssa & Skylar Ayers of Arizona and Zachary Gardner-Northrop of Midland, MI. Sisters: Rosalie Hinman of Imlay City, Mary Lou Northrop of Grand Rapids; Brothers: Wally (Karen) Northrop of Attica, Stanley (Diana) Northrop of Wisconsin; Sister-in-law, Elizabeth Barlaan Northrop of Imlay City; as well as several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Matt was preceded in death by: his wife, Barbara Northrop; his parents, Jay and Rose Northrop; brother, Patrick Northrop; brother in law, Kenneth Hinman; nephew, Brockton Northrop; and niece, Stephanie Northrop.
Funeral services will begin Tuesday March 14th at 10:15 a.m. at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. and funeral mass will begin at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Clair. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, St. Clair.
Visiting hours are Monday March 13th from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home. Rosary will be
