Mary Margaret Rhein's Obituary
Mary Margaret Rhein, 87, passed peacefully on June 6, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. She was born October 29, 1936, in St. Clair Michigan to Aloysius and Dorothy (West) Schweihofer. A resilient woman of faith, Mary’s life was spent in service to her community. At a youthful age she was a volunteer at Pt Huron Hospital and through the years provided homecare and housecleaning to many ailing relatives and friends. She was a member of the St. Augustine Altar Sodality, a Eucharistic Minister, a volunteer server at the annual St. Augustine’s festival dinners, and baked pies and bread for countless bake sales. For 15 years Mary worked as a food service employee at Richmond Community Schools. She loved being outdoors and could be found tending her many flower beds or filling her bird feeders in spring and summer. Fall was spent canning fruits and vegetables, while winter was a time for crocheting, sewing, or painting ceramic Santa Clauses for Christmas presents. She was known for her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, and creative Halloween costumes. She always enjoyed playing cards while visiting with friends and family.
On October 11, 1958, Mary married her polka partner Alfred Rhein, and raised 6 children at the home they built together in Richmond (Casco). She is survived by her children Joseph (Sandra), Patrick (Mary Lou), Catherine (James) Balduck, Christopher (Jo Anne), Vicki (Richard) Miksicek, and Matthew (Rebecca), 12 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, brother David (Dorothy) Schweihofer, sisters Joan (John) Paling, Josephine Long, Annette (Bob) Burgess, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
