Marilyn Mae Smith's Obituary
Marilyn Mae Smith, age 92, of Brooklyn, Michigan passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 8, 2025. She was born May 8, 1932 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont to the late Robert and Teresa Cooney. Marilyn married the love of her life Grant Smith on February 14, 1953 and he preceded her in death on January 23, 2018 just 2 weeks shy of their 65th wedding anniversary.
Marilyn was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church, a loyal Daughters of Isabella member, she loved traveling, cooking, gardening, was a fiercely competitive card player and gambling on the slot machines was her nighttime routine. She was an avid and talented crafter and sewer making Afghan blankets up until her last days. But most of all her greatest achievement in life was being the matriarch and raising her family who she dearly loved, she cherished every moment she spent with them.
She is survived by her children, Kevin (Sylvia) Maranon-Smith, Nancy (Paul) Steffes, Rob Smith; 15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; siblings, Melvin (MaryAnn) Cooney, Bernard (JoAnn) Cooney, Elaine Latulipe; sister-in-law, Dorothy Cooney; along with many nieces and nephews.
Marilyn is preceded in death by her son, Tim Smith; daughter, Debbie Smith; brother, Robert Cooney.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn, Michigan on July 12, 2025 tentatively at 11:00 a.m. with a memorial celebration to follow. Interment of cremains will be at St. Rita’s Columbarium with her husband Grant. To leave a message of comfort visit www.youngcolonial.com
