Lynn David Markel's Obituary
Lynn David Markel, 93, passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on Thurs, February 17, 2022 in China, MI. He was born on December 12, 1928 to the late Lawrence and May Markel. Lynn was one of 8 children who were raised on the family farm on Markel Rd.
Lynn was a longtime resident of China Township and operated a dairy farm with his family for many years. Lynn was also a barber who enjoyed owning and operating Markel’s Barbershop in St. Clair for decades. He was a US Army veteran who was stationed in Germany with the 194th Field Artillery Battalion. Lynn was also a long-time member of Holy Cross Parish and the Knights of Columbus.
Lynn enjoyed being outside on his tractors, following the stock market, playing euchre and playing scratch-off lottery tickets – but most of all he enjoyed telling stories and socializing with family and friends.
Lynn is survived by Janice (Zweng), his wife of 65 years and his 6 children; John (Yvonne), Timothy (Dorene), Peter (Nancy), Jeffrey (Suzanne Valenti), Karen (Brian Gordon) and Anthony (Margaret), 15 grandchildren; Aaron, Arielle, Jessica, Hannah, Shane, Nicholas, Emily, Zachary, Christopher, Kyle, Andrew, Gretchen, Meredith, Matthew, Holley and 14 great grandchildren.
Lynn is also survived by his two sisters Sylvia Dietlin, Marie Markel IHM, sister in-laws; Alice Kaminsky, Jeanne Markel, Leona Markel, Marion Johnson and Eleanor (Chuck) Sexauer.
Lynn was preceded in death by his brothers Charles, Bernard, Clair, Kenneth and Marvin: and in-laws Betty and Allyne Markel, Marvin Dietlin and Ralph Johnson.
A funeral mass will be Mon Feb 21 at 1:00 PM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Our Lady on the River Parish, Marine City. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Marine City. Visiting hours are Sunday Feb 20th from 2:00-8:00 PM at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. with a rosary offered at 7:00 p.m. Additional visitation prior to mass Monday 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. at church.
