Mr. Kenneth Michael Markel's Obituary
Kenneth Michael Markel, 87, of China Twp., passed Jan 1, 2015 after a short illness. Kenneth was born March 23, 1927 in Marine City to Lawrence and Mary Markel and was one of eight children.
Ken was a union carpenter for many years and also farmed his whole life. He was an avid gardener and a loyal Detroit Tigers fan. Ken enjoyed deer hunting, bowling, snowmobiling and spending time at his cabin in Roscommon, MI. Most of all Ken enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by Leona, his wife of 64 years, and his 6 children: Jim (Peggy), Larry (Sue), Marilyn Zimmer, Linda (Timothy) Mollan, Patrica Cook and Dennis, 15 grandchildren: Angie, Kevin, Kristi, Tanya, Tracie, Brooke, Bobbi Jo, Becky, Jacob, Frank, Rachel, Emily, Jeremy, Taylor, Morgan and 17 great-grandchildren. Ken is also survived by his two sisters Sylvia Dietlin, Marie Markel IHM, brother Lynn (Janice) Markel, in-laws: Alice (George) Kaminski, Jeanne Markel, Lucille (Jack) Arnold, Loretta McHugh and Melvin (Lois) Osterland.
Kenneth was preceeded in death by son-in-laws: John Zimmer and Robert Cook, brothers: Charles, Bernard, Clare and Marvin and in-laws: Betty and Allyne Markel and Marvin Dietlin and George McHugh
Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather he will be deeply missed by family and friends. Ken will be forever remembered for his gentle warm personality, kindness and patience.
A funeral mass will be Tuesday January 6th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clair. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, St. Clair. Visiting hours are Monday 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home with a rosary service at 7:15 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church prior to mass. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or ALS of Michigan.
