John H. Schroeppel's Obituary
John H. Schroeppel, age 88 of St. Clair, went home to be with the Lord March 22, 2017. He was born to the late Louis and Cora Schroeppel on December 22, 1928 in St. Clair, and grew up on their dairy farm on St. Clair Hwy. He was a 1946 graduate of St. Clair High School where he played trumpet in the band and was a member of the JV basketball team.
John married Barbara Jeanne Macklem on November 5, 1949 in St. Clair. He retired from Diamond Crystal/Akzo Salt Co. after 43 years where he held several positions, including supervisor in the processing and shipping areas, and won several cost savings awards. An avid gardener, John supplied his friends with sweet corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and strawberries. He also grew gladiolas and won many awards at gladiola shows in the Midwest and Canada. John served as chairman of the Building & Sites Committee for the East China School District in the 1960s and was a member of Columbus Bible Church. John was mechanically inclined and could fix anything. He enjoyed photography, carpentry, playing his trumpet in the church orchestra, reading historical novels, and researching his family tree which led to locating long-lost relatives in Germany and the U.S.
John is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jeanne, daughters Phyllis Van Kampen (Lewis) and Patricia Kearns (Phillip), son Ken, and granddaughters Erin and Laura Van Kampen. He was predeceased by his sister Norma Van Essen.
