John F. Basney, age 84, of Marine City, died December 29, 2013. He was born April 7, 1929 in Marine City to Gordon and Agnes Basney. On April 16, 1955 John married Mary Jane Trager in St. Clair. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, 45 year member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2251, St. Clair, lifetime member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Marine City, where he was also a member of the Ushers Club for over 50 years.
John was a drywall finisher for Custom Drywall, Utica for 38 years and a member of the Painters Union Local 213.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Mary Jane Basney, children; John David (Deb) Basney, Gordon (Betty) Basney, Mary Beth (Dale) Vanderworp, Frank (Sue) Basney, Ed (Beth) Basney, Don Basney, niece; Connie Trager, 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, brother; Andrew (Rose) Welser and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by father; Gordon Basney, mother and father Agnes and Emil B. Welser and brother Emil G. Welser.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday January 3rd at 12:00 noon at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Our Lady on the River Parish, Marine City. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Visiting hours are Wednesday January 1st, 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. with a Thursday evening rosary. Additional visitation will be at the church Friday from 11:00 to 12:00 prior to mass.
