Helen "Aileen" Van Tiem's Obituary
Helen “Aileen” Van Tiem, age 92, of St. Clair, passed away March 15, 2024 surrounded by her family. She was born November 12, 1931 in East China Twp., to the late Theodore and Helen Achatz. She married Lawrence Van Tiem on January 5, 1951 in Detroit. He passed away September 1, 2011.
Helen and Larry raised 10 children. They were an inseparable team guiding their children with faith and love. Family was everything to them. Helen loved to prepare meals for family and friends. The scent of fresh bread or a favorite meal often greeted those who entered her home. She loved to celebrate family events; Christmas was one of her favorites.
Helen, was an avid reader. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting things for her family. Growing up on a farm, she loved horseback riding. Favorite family vacations included camping trips.
Helen was a very strong person despite her quite manner. Her deep faith carried her through challenging times, a powerful example to those around her. Helen was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clair.
She is survived by her children, Larry (Penny), Helen (Tom) Kolafa, Mike (Diane), John (Teri), Mark (Karen), Ray (Sharon), Blane (Mary), Karen (John) Plizga, Ann Marie (Eric) Singer, Mary (Glenn) Arrowood; as well as 27 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Van Tiem; sister, Ursula Miller; and brothers, Theodore “Bud”, Fred, and John Achatz.
Friday, March 22nd: visiting hours will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home, China Twp. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, March 23rd: Prayers will be said at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home with procession to church prior to mass. Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Clair. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
