Frederick William Cottrell's Obituary
Frederick William Cottrell, age 86, of China Twp., peacefully fell asleep and was welcomed home by his wife, Maraleen on August 14, 2025. Fred was born June 24, 1939 to the late James “Andy” and Margaret Cottrell.
On April 27, 1962, Fred married Maraleen Mae Denslow. She preceded him in death January 12, 2021.
Fred enjoyed telling stories and sharing memories, among his favorites was, as a young boy, walking to the corner grocery with his little wagon in tow, along with his father and coming home with a piece of fudge.
Fred learned the value of hard work at an early age. As a youth he assisted his father digging graves and installing foundations in the Marine City Cemeteries. As time moved forward, Fred worked for a local grocery store and then he had an opportunity to sail the Great Lakes. He sailed for the Columbia Transportation Company on both the Middletown and Holloway freighters. After sailing he gained employment with Western Crude, which led to his final job with Mich Con. Fred retired from Mich Con in 1998 following many years of service.
Fred maintained his home and his yard to perfection. He especially enjoyed mowing his lawn several times a week and recording the dates he mowed on his calendar. Fred also enjoyed planting a vegetable garden each year.
Fred was a devoted husband and always at Maraleen’s side. They would knit items and donate them to local organizations, Maraleen would knit the caps and mittens and Fred would knit the scarves. They were also a perfect match in the kitchen as Maraleen was an expert baker and Fred loved his baked goods and chocolate. In recent years, Fred found quiet entertainment solving puzzle books.
Fred was also a proud grandfather. Among the many good times shared with his “Buddy” Kevin Gerald, Fred always looked forward to their weekly bets during the NFL season. He was the best grandfather a grandson could ask for.
Fred was also a proud father and is survived by his children, Jeffrey (Lisa) Cottrell and Lisa Hutkowski and grandson, Kevin Gerald Hutkowski Jr.
Per Fred’s wishes a private funeral service will be held with interment in Rosehill Cemetery, East China Twp.
