Dorothy Lucile Kaufman's Obituary
Dorothy Lucile Kaufman, 92, of East China, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 24, 2021 at Ascension River District Hospital in East China Township. Dorothy was born August 6, 1929 to the late Ralph and Loma (Zaetsch) Simons. Her Baptism and Confirmation were at St. Johns Evangelical and Reformed Church, Marine City. She married Norman A. Kaufman on May 1, 1948 also at St. John’s.
Her favorite pastimes were cooking and baking, visiting, playing cards, bowling, and traveling with friends. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Casco Township, where she was always active with the Women’s Group, cleaning, arranging flowers, altar team, funeral luncheons, special serving team, annual Christmas Bazaar, Chili Cook-off, the monthly meetings and Girls Nite Out; she also taught Sunday School for many years. With the family farm right next to the parsonage and church, becoming friends and helping out the Pastor and their wives by baby sitting was a joy through the years and many long friendship were made with those families. She was also an active Mom in the Palms School’s Mothers Club in the early 1960’s. She belonged to a neighborhood women’s card club and then a couples card club for more years than we could count.
Surviving are her children Linda (James) Cottrell, Dale (Lois) Kaufman; and daughter- in-law Deborah Kaufman; Grandchildren Jenny (Aaron) Atkinson, Charissa (David) Smith, Andrew (Stephanie) Cottrell, Ryan (Kristina) Kaufman, Jonathan (Kristina) Cottrell, Benjamin (Whitney) Kaufman, Erin (Jeffery) Doetsch, and 14 Great Grandchildren.., Brother and sister -in-law Howard (Joyce) Simons, many friends, nephews, nieces, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; son, David N. Kaufman; grandson, Derek Kaufman; and brothers, Donald Simons and Kenneth Simons.
The family extends a special thank you to the staff and caregivers at the Hospital and Mallard’s Landing, where she had made her home for the last 3 ½ years.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Building Fund. (St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 5322 Palms Road, Casco, MI 48064) Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at Young’s Funeral Home, 4061 St. Clair Hwy., China Township on Friday, January 7, 2022 from 4-8 p.m. and at the church one hour before the Celebration of Life Service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Kirk Langset officiating.
Urn interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Casco Township.
