Catherine Cecilia "Cath" Landon's Obituary
Catherine Cecilia "Cath" Landon, 84, of Port Huron, Michigan, passed away on July 15, 2026, after a short illness.
Cath was born on November 12, 1941, in St. Clair, Michigan, to the late Eleanor and Norbert Landon.
She graduated from St. Stephen High School in 1959 and earned her degree from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan, in 1961. Following graduation, Cath entered the Adrian Dominican Sisters, beginning a life dedicated to faith, service, and education.
Cath began her elementary teaching career in Florida, serving students in Miami, St. Petersburg, and Jacksonville. In 1970, she returned to Michigan to teach at Holy Name School in Detroit. The following year, Cath left the convent and continued her teaching career in Port Huron, where she taught at Grant Elementary School, McKinley Elementary School, and finally Howard Crull Elementary School.
After an extraordinary 40-year career in education, Cath retired in 2001. Ever the dedicated teacher, she kept meticulous records and proudly noted that she had taught 1,263 students throughout her career. She took great pride in her work as an educator and in the many young lives she influenced over four decades in the classroom.
Cath approached life with thoughtfulness, intelligence, and authenticity. She had an exceptional attention to detail and took pride in keeping a neat and orderly home and car. Independent by nature, Cath never wanted to be a burden to those she loved and preferred to keep the peace rather than rock the boat. She was humble, considerate, and quietly strong, choosing kindness and steadiness over drawing attention to herself.
In retirement, Cath enjoyed spending time with her close friends, affectionately known as the “TW’s” (Tebeau Women). Their friendship brought her many years of laughter, companionship, and treasured memories. She also cherished the friendships she formed with the Crull Retirees, lovingly known as the “Crullies,” where she found herself once again surrounded by the warmth and support of a special “Sisterhood.” Cath treasured the companionship of her beloved cat, Annie, whose faithful presence brought her comfort and joy for 12 years.
Cath is preceded in death by her brothers, Patrick and Michael Landon. She treasured the memories and connections she shared with each of them. One of the many special traditions she enjoyed with her brother, Mike, was attending high school football games together, where they found joy in the excitement of the games and, most importantly, in each other’s company.
Cath is survived by her brother, David (Margaret) Landon; her nephew, Courtney Landon (Troy Wangen); her nieces, Katie (Travis) Frazer, Abby Landon, and Maggie (Nathaniel) Tortora; her grand-nephews, Sam Frazer and Luca Tortora; and her grand-niece, Ellie Frazer.
Though they lived across the country from one another and did not have the opportunity to spend much time together, Cath left a lasting impression on her 18-year-old grand-nephew. He affectionately called her his “favorite old person,” admiring her independence and the way she always cared about not being a burden to others. He shared, “My favorite part about Cath was that having a relationship with her was always just easy. There were never any prying questions, uncomfortable situations, or any friction whatsoever.” His words reflect the quiet strength, authenticity, and warmth that defined Cath and the special way she connected with those around her.
A private service for immediate family members will be held later this year.
Memorial contributions in celebration of Cath's life, and in honor of her beloved companion Annie, may be made to the Blue Water Area Humane Society, 6266 Lapeer Road, North Street, MI 48049.
Cath will be remembered as a devoted educator, a loyal friend, a loving sister and aunt, and a woman whose kindness, humor, humility, and dedication touched the lives of the 1,263 students she taught, as well as all who had the privilege of knowing her.
